Why Price Alone Doesn't Tell You If Crypto Is Cheap or Expensive
Bitcoin at $30,000 is not inherently cheap, and Bitcoin at $90,000 is not inherently expensive. The raw price only tells you where the market is right now, not whether current holders are sitting on large unrealized gains, whether the network is being used, or whether the asset is statistically stretched relative to its own history. That distinction matters far more in crypto than in most equity markets, where you at least have earnings and revenue as an anchor.
On-chain valuation metrics exist to fill that gap. Because blockchains record every transaction publicly, analysts can measure things equity markets cannot: the actual cost basis of every coin in circulation, how much economic activity is flowing across the network, and how far current price has drifted from those underlying fundamentals.
Two of the most widely used metrics for this purpose are MVRV, and its normalized cousin the MVRV Z-Score, and NVT ratio. Neither predicts the next move with certainty, but both give you a data-driven answer to the question every crypto investor eventually asks: is this actually a good level to be buying or selling at, or is emotion doing most of the talking?
What MVRV Ratio Measures
MVRV stands for market value to realized value. Market value is simply price multiplied by circulating supply, the number you already see on any price tracker. Realized value instead values every coin at the price it last moved on-chain, effectively estimating the aggregate cost basis of everyone currently holding the asset rather than assuming everyone bought at today's price.
When MVRV is high, the market is valuing coins well above what the average holder actually paid, meaning the network is sitting on large unrealized profit. Historically, these stretches have coincided with late-cycle euphoria, since holders with large paper gains eventually become more willing sellers as price extends further.
When MVRV is low or falls below one, the market is valuing coins below their aggregate cost basis, meaning the average holder is underwater. These conditions have historically marked capitulation phases, where forced and emotional selling has already pushed price below what most participants originally paid.
Turning MVRV Into a Z-Score for Cycle Extremes
Raw MVRV is useful, but it does not account for how the metric's own range has widened as the asset has matured over multiple cycles. The MVRV Z-Score standardizes it by subtracting realized value from market value and dividing by the standard deviation of market value, producing a comparable reading across different eras of the asset's price history.
This standardization is what makes the Z-Score more useful for spotting genuine extremes than the raw ratio alone. A Z-Score reading that would have been unremarkable in an early, low-liquidity cycle can be flagged consistently as statistically stretched once compared against the asset's full historical distribution instead of just its recent range.
In practice, sustained readings deep in the upper band have historically lined up with cycle tops, while readings deep in the lower band have historically lined up with cycle bottoms. Treat both as probability signals about crowd positioning, not as precise timing tools for an exact entry or exit price.
What NVT Ratio Measures
NVT, network value to transactions, is often described as a crypto equivalent of the price-to-earnings ratio. Network value is market capitalization; transaction volume is the actual value moved on-chain over a given period, used as a rough proxy for how much genuine economic activity the network is processing at any given point in its history.
A high NVT means the network's valuation has run well ahead of the on-chain activity supporting it, similar to a stock trading at a rich multiple of a shrinking revenue base. A low NVT means the network is processing meaningful transaction value relative to its current market capitalization.
NVT works best on networks where on-chain transaction volume closely tracks real usage. It becomes noisier on chains with heavy exchange-internal transfers, wrapped-asset movement, or bot activity inflating the transaction count without reflecting genuine organic demand for the underlying network's actual services.
Some analysts prefer NVT Signal, a smoothed variant using a moving average of transaction volume instead of a single day's reading, precisely to reduce the noise that short-term spikes in transfer activity can otherwise introduce into the raw ratio on any given day.
Reading MVRV and NVT Together Across Past Cycles
Neither metric is meant to be read alone. MVRV tells you how stretched holder profitability is; NVT tells you whether network usage justifies the current valuation. Used together across Bitcoin's past cycles, a few recurring patterns stand out for anyone building a mental model of how these readings have historically lined up:
- Late 2017 and late 2021: MVRV Z-Score pushed into historically extreme upper territory as NVT also climbed, both flagging valuation well ahead of on-chain fundamentals shortly before major tops.
- Early 2019 and late 2022: MVRV fell into deeply negative territory, holders were broadly underwater, and NVT compressed as price fell faster than usage, both consistent with capitulation-phase bottoms.
- Mid-cycle consolidation periods: both metrics have often sat in a neutral middle band for extended stretches, correctly signaling that the market was neither obviously cheap nor obviously expensive.
The lesson from these episodes is not that the metrics called every top and bottom perfectly, they did not, but that extreme readings on both at once have historically carried more information than either single metric checked in isolation, especially when paired with volume and sentiment data covered elsewhere in your research process.
Limitations Every On-Chain Metric Shares
On-chain valuation metrics are built almost entirely on Bitcoin and a handful of other transparent, high-liquidity chains with long price histories. Applying the same framework to a newly launched token with a short trading history and thin realized-value data produces numbers that are far less reliable and should be weighted accordingly in any decision.
Exchange behavior, custodial wallet consolidation, and layer-2 activity can all distort the raw transaction and realized-value data these metrics depend on, since coins moving between an exchange's own internal wallets can register as on-chain activity without representing any real change in economic ownership at all.
These metrics also say nothing about near-term catalysts like regulation, exchange failures, or macro liquidity shifts. They describe where the market sits relative to its own history, not what happens next, and treating a stretched reading as a guaranteed reversal has burned traders who ignored that distinction.
Building These Metrics Into a Screening or Research Workflow
The most useful way to apply MVRV and NVT is as a standing part of a repeatable research check, not a one-time lookup you consult only after a big move has already happened and the signal is stale.
- Check MVRV Z-Score and NVT together on a fixed schedule, weekly or monthly, rather than only during periods of high excitement or fear.
- Compare the current reading against the asset's own historical range instead of an arbitrary fixed number that ignores how the range has shifted over time.
- Cross-check any extreme reading against price structure, funding rates, and exchange netflow before treating it as a standalone reason to act.
- Log each reading alongside your actual decision, so you can later evaluate whether acting on the metric actually improved your entries and exits.

Turning On-Chain Valuation Into a Disciplined Habit
MVRV and NVT will not tell you the exact top or bottom of the next cycle, and nobody should treat them that way. What they do reliably offer is a way to check whether current price has drifted far from the network's own historical valuation range and underlying usage, using data nobody can fake or restate later.
Investors who track these metrics consistently, rather than reaching for them only after a big move has already happened, build a much better intuition for how stretched the market actually is at any given moment compared to those relying on price charts alone, and that intuition compounds across cycles.
The clear takeaway: treat MVRV Z-Score and NVT as probability tools that inform position sizing and patience, not as precise buy and sell signals, and always read them alongside price action, sentiment, and your own risk tolerance before acting on an extreme reading.
